Kat has always seen possibility in things other people might overlook — an old bottle, a piece of vintage glass, a weathered board, or something forgotten on a thrift-store shelf.
A Delaware native and lifelong maker, her work is inspired by the coast she calls home and by a simple belief: beautiful things don’t always have to begin with something new.
At KEM by Design, Kat combines reclaimed glass, wood, resin, and rescued materials with traditional handwork and modern tools. From tumbling glass to soldering, engraving, pouring and finishing, the process is as much a part of the art as the finished piece.
Her favorite part is knowing that something once ordinary — or nearly forgotten — can become something worth keeping.

The designer’s eye behind KEM.
With a degree in graphic design and a natural eye for balance, proportion, and detail, Scott brings a different perspective to KEM by Design.
He has a knack for spotting what works — and, perhaps more importantly, what almost works. Whether he’s weighing in on a new design, helping work through an idea, or giving a finished piece one last inspection, his eye for detail has made him KEM’s unofficial
Quality Control department.
He takes the position very seriously.

KEM by Design began as Kat’s creative vision, built from a lifelong love of making and seeing possibility in things others might overlook.
Then along came Scott.
With a degree in graphic design and an eye for detail, Scott brought a different perspective to the work. Where Kat tends to ask, “What could this become?” Scott is often the one asking, “Is it finished yet?” Together, those two viewpoints have become an important part of KEM.
We create differently, notice different things, and occasionally have very different opinions about when a piece is actually done. But somewhere between the ideas, the experimenting, the second opinions and the final quality check, the work becomes better because we made it together.
